The people and the place behind Jacaranda Court

You are told this story often, as it explains much of how Jacaranda Court is arranged today.

The founder

A schoolmaster who liked a well-kept table

The brick and timber front of Jacaranda Court on Bong Bong Street at dusk

You will hear this story from most of the longer-serving staff: the founder taught at a school nearby for thirty years before he bought the building on Bong Bong Street.

He fitted a small kitchen into what had been his own study, and within a year had put five card tables into the larger room behind it.

You can still see his handwriting on a framed set of house notes near the card room door, kept exactly as he left them.

Then and now

The building, as you'll find it

The card room today, five tables beneath the original windows
A hand of bridge dealt out at the table nearest the fireplace
A table dressed for the evening, chairs drawn up and ready
Tea served in the dining room ahead of the evening's first sitting

The reading corner, kept quiet for guests between hands
